Sharpen Your Research Skills: A Recap of DGHE’s Workshop

Posted on 15/08/24

On 22nd July 2024, David Game Higher Education (DGHE) welcomed members of the local community to a free Research Skills Workshop designed to equip participants with essential skills for navigating the complex world of online information. Led by our Academic Tutor and Librarian, the workshop offered practical strategies for anyone looking to improve their research skills, whether for personal or professional use. For those interested in furthering their skills, we’ll be providing helpful resources at the end of this blog, so be sure to check them out.

The workshop covered a wide range of topics, starting with tips on how to find authoritative, quality information online. With so much content available, knowing where to look—and how to evaluate it—is key. Participants explored the differences between disinformation and misinformation and learned how to identify both, helping them to be more discerning about the information they encounter daily.

A major focus was on combating fake news and recognising bias in both resources and personal perspectives. The workshop also introduced alternative research methods, encouraging participants to go beyond Google and discover Open Access databases and other high-quality resources. This included practical advice on how to communicate effectively with databases to yield better search results.

Additionally, the session touched on the ethics of AI in research, a timely topic as AI becomes more prevalent in how information is generated and disseminated. The workshop concluded with discussions on applying these research skills in daily life and work, helping attendees improve decision-making and enhance their professional performance.
