LinkedIn: The World’s Biggest and Most Effective Networking Tool
Posted on 04/03/26
Careers Week
It is Careers Week, and this is your reminder that your qualification is only part of the picture.
Your network matters.
LinkedIn is the world’s largest professional networking platform:
• 1.2 billion users worldwide
• 47.5 million users in the UK
• 310 million people logging in every single day
Behind those numbers are employers, recruiters, business owners and professionals sharing opportunities and insights in real time.
If you want to progress, pivot or grow, you need to be visible.

What Does a Strong LinkedIn Profile Look Like?
If someone searched your name today, what would they see?
A strong profile is clear, focused and forward looking.
1. A Professional Photo
Use a clear headshot with good lighting and a simple background. You do not need anything complicated, just confident and approachable.
2. A Headline With Direction
Do not just list your current job. Show where you are heading.
For example:
Business Management Student at DGHE | Aspiring Operations Manager
Cyber Security | IT Support Professional | Focused on Network Security
This tells people your ambition as well as your current role.
3. A Short “About” Section
In a few sentences, explain:
• What you are doing now
• What you are studying
• What skills you are developing
• What type of opportunity you are working towards
You are not starting from zero. As a DGHE student, you are building on real experience. Make that visible.
4. Achievements, Not Just Duties
Instead of listing tasks, highlight impact. Show responsibility, leadership, growth and resilience, especially if you are balancing work and study.

How Can You Take Advantage of This Powerful Tool?
Creating a profile is step one. Using it is where the real value begins.
Connect With Purpose
Start with:
• Classmates
• Lecturers
• Colleagues
• DGHE alumni
• Professionals in your chosen field
Add a short message when you connect. A simple introduction builds stronger relationships.
Follow Industry Pages
Stay informed about trends, vacancies and company updates in your sector.
Share Your Journey
You do not need to post daily. Start small:
• Share a reflection from a lecture
• Comment on an industry article
• Talk about a project you are working on
• Celebrate completing an assignment or module
This shows commitment and development.
Explore Opportunities
Use the Jobs section to:
• Set up job alerts
• Search for roles related to your studies
• Research companies before applying
Recruiters actively search LinkedIn for candidates. A complete and active profile increases your chances of being found.
Boost Your Knowledge With the DGHE Library
The library supports both your studies and your professional development:
